MENTOR:
Ravynn K. Stringfield (she/her/hers)
CATEGORY:
Young Adult, New Adult
SUB GENRES:
Contemporary Romance, Rom Com, Science Fiction/Fantasy, Fiction with Strong Romantic Elements
BIO:
I'm Ravynn! I'm an ex-academic turned full-time writer currently writing in young adult contemporary/romance, though many of my first manuscripts were fantasy. My first novel, Love Requires Chocolate, will be out from Joy Revolution on August 20, 2024, and my second, Love in 280 Characters or Less, will be out from Feiwel & Friends on April 15, 2025. Outside of writing, I'm an artist, an editor for Midnight and Indigo magazine, and a very serious crafter. My current craft obsession is crochet. On a lazy Sunday, you can usually find me hanging out with my dog, Genghis, a cup of coffee and probably rewatching Legend of Korra.
MSWL:
Tropes aren't my first hook on a novel—I'm usually looking for a really interesting character to follow—but I'm always a sucker for friends-to-lovers or second-chance. I like my romances to also feel like coming-of-age novels because I think you can discover a lot about a person by the way they handle, and learn to handle, their relationships with others.
In list form:
-Friends-to-lovers
-Second chance
-College romances
-Black love (!!!!)
-Coming-of-age feel
-Lots of juicy sensory details (do you describe the feel of clothes? scents of a city? the taste of food? GIMME!)
-Delicious banter
-Girls the average person might consider "difficult"
-Literary feel
-Family relationships are important Books and movies with feels I love:
-To All The Boys I've Loved Before (film, but also books) -Brown Sugar (film)
-Sarah Dessen's general body of work
-Talia Hibbert's body of work, but especially Take a Hint, Dani Brown (book)
-Reggie and Delilah's Year of Falling (book)
-Charming as a Verb (book)
MENTORING STYLE
I've not mentored in this capacity before so I'm not sure. However, as a person, I'm a planner. Likely during our first meeting, we'll probably set goals, plans, and deadlines for our time together, and I'm very good at sticking to goal posts, with the understanding things can change. I believe we ought to be rigid about the goal, flexible about how we get there. I believe I tend to lead with gentleness, so feedback will be probably be substantive, but kind. So if you're the kind of person who also wants a built in cheerleader, as well as someone who is going to help you build your confidence in your work, I might be a good fit. I'm happy to also see what my mentee might need in the relationship and try to be adaptable in that way.
APPLICATIONS FROM CONNECTIONS
I don't have a preference regarding who may submit to me, even if we have connected in the past.
