MENTOR:
Noelle Douglas (she/her)
CATEGORY:
Adult
SUB GENRES:
Contemporary Romance, Rom Com, Holiday Romance
BIO:
I am a novelist and library staffer. When I'm not writing stories or reading, I love to travel. Experiencing new places inspires my work and enriches my life. I visited Poland and the Czech Republic on my honeymoon. I live in Chicagoland with my husband and our charming sons. I write holiday romantic comedies as Noelle Douglas. Once upon a time I got a degree in pastry arts and worked in the business for a few years before I realized I liked eating treats more than making them. I'm also a hopeless reality TV fan and have spent too many hours watching Real Housewives of just about anywhere, Vanderpump Rules, and Vanderpump Villa. I just started Below Deck.
MSWL:
I love books with humor and heart. If you can make me laugh on one page and realize something profound about the nature of love on the next, I'll be hooked. The master of the romantic comedy, in my opinion, is Ali Hazelwood. Her books crack me up, but she also explores deep feelings in a meaningful way.
Besides Ali, I enjoy the work of Tessa Bailey, Jo Segura, Rachel Lynn Solomon, Alexis Daria, and Casey McQuiston. These authors write complex characters and have fun, engaging hooks to their stories, like a reality tv dance contest or an archaeological dig.
Send me your contemporary rom coms, especially any high-concept settings like my favorite authors' books. On the flip side, I also love a good small-town romance that is full of fun side characters.
Some tropes I adore are: enemies-to-lovers, only one bed, and fake dating. I write low-spice but am open to reading any spice level.
I'm not a good fit for dark romance or anything involving serious danger to children or animals.
MENTORING STYLE
I believe that anyone can learn to craft a marketable novel if they're willing to put in the work. My mentee can expect an edit letter on their first 50 pages, and a line edit of the query and synopsis. We'll also have Zoom or FaceTime meetings where we can discuss strategies for revision in greater detail and where I can answer questions in-depth. I'll have some craft books and websites to recommend to help you revise your pages and query. Also, I will help cheer you on! This business can be lonely and intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. I will encourage you and also give you tips on building your community of fellow authors.
APPLICATIONS FROM CONNECTIONS
If we've interacted extensively online or I've beta-read for you, please do not apply to me. If we're mutuals on social media with minimal interaction, please feel free to apply!
