MENTOR:
Pyae Moe Thet War (she/her)
CATEGORY:
Adult
SUB GENRES:
Contemporary Romance, Rom Com, Fiction with Strong Romantic Elements
BIO:
My debut novel, an action-rom com titled I DID SOMETHING BAD, will be published by St Martins in October 2024. I am also a creative writing PhD candidate at Newcastle University, where I am writing a contemporary adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion and studying other contemporary Austen reimaginings by Asian authors. Apart from books, my passions in life include my dogs Gus and Missy, desserts, and Taylor Swift's discography.
MSWL:
I love books that have big emotions and that aren't scared of tackling wider sociopolitical topics while making the reader swoon and laugh. I love, love, love banter, and my favorite scenes are the ones where the two love interests play verbal ping-pong with one another. Give me complex characters who equally push and lift each other as much as they frustrate and challenge one another.
I'm also a fan of books that combine romance with action or thriller characteristics. If you could see your book being turned into a fun blockbuster rom-com like THE LOST CITY, I want to read it! On a somewhat related note, I'm a sucker for a good F1 romance.
Books that blend romance with magical realism (like Ashley Poston's adult novels) are a dream.
If your book is meta-y and the plot revolves around writing/publishing (e.g. BOOK LOVERS or A NOVEL LOVE STORY), please send it to me!
I'm not a good fit for writers of historical romance or romantasy. Finally, please don't apply to me if your manuscript includes any of the following: death of a pet, emotional or sexual infidelity, characters in the military or law enforcement, stories heavily set around or about the COVID-19 pandemic.
MENTORING STYLE
I am an incredibly enthusiastic reader and will incorporate a lot of exclamation marks and all caps in my feedback! I believe that the most helpful feedback is the kind that leaves you feeling more excited than anxious to get back to the keyboard and start working on the next draft. While my feedback is honest and detailed, I want to hear your goals and visions for your story first, and I encourage you to push back if and when you feel like a piece of advice isn't right for your story (you know your book better than anyone!). I'm also more than happy to mentor you beyond the editorial stuff and answer any questions you have about publishing in general. I'm the kind of writer who disappears into a writing hole until they have a full new draft, so if that's what you need, then I totally understand! But if you'd prefer more regular check-ins and feedback on every few chapters, then I can provide that as well. This is your book and your drafting process, and you'll take the lead in terms of what would be most helpful for you.
APPLICATIONS FROM CONNECTIONS
Please do not apply to me if we know each other either in real life or have had substantial conversations through social media. If we're mutuals online but haven't really talked more than once or twice, feel free to apply!
