MENTOR:
Daniel James (he/they)
CATEGORY:
Young Adult, New Adult
SUB GENRES:
Contemporary Romance, Rom Com, Paranormal, Contemporary Fantasy/Light Fantasy ONLY
BIO:
I have a BA in Creative Writing and an MFA in Book Art from Mills college. I am represented by Kara Grajkowski of 3 Seas Literary, and published my first novel as a web serial with Tapas Entertainment in June 2024. My hobbies include singing (I am a vocal coach at my day job!) and book binding/letterpress printing. I have an art shed, which was once a pool shed but got converted, where I often work on different crafts that never get finished. My cat, Chidi (yes, like The Good Place), likes to help me work by laying directly on my laptop keyboard. My favorite authors include Z Brewer and Aiden Thomas in the kidlit space, and Alexis Hall in the New Adult space. If I love a story and its characters, I will do just about anything for it! (Including read 2.3M words, if you are my favorite Webnovel, as a random example.) If we seem like we might fit, please submit!
MSWL:
-I am always hungry for second chance romances. Give me lost childhood lovers and missed connections that turn into something else ten years later. Give me best friends to strangers to lovers. Any and all of it!
-Comedies! I love a good laugh, and I'm a sucker for 2000s era romcoms! (Think She's The Man, The Proposal, things in that arena)
-Although contemporary romance is my current home, I actually love a good contemporary fantasy. If you have just a hint of magic in your world as a backdrop for the romance, I will probably love it.
-Soul Mates! This may be cliche, but I'm a sucker for "meant to be" stories. I want to be swept away. I want to be convinced they were literally made to be together. That the universe and the forces of fate moved mountains to get them in the same place at the same time.
-LGBTQ+ romance, particularly if it's MM! And bonus points for trans main characters. (PLEASE NOTE: I will never require you to self identify in order to submit to me. You do not have to disclose your sexuality or gender identity to submit an LGBTQ+ story to me!)
I AM NOT THE BEST FIT FOR:
-High Fantasy/Second World Fantasy. This isn't to say I won't consider it, because I love reading these kinds of stories, but since I have the least industry experience with this genre it is better to submit to a mentor better suited than me.
-Sci-Fi, especially Hard Sci-Fi! Again, I don't have the industry experience to best support you.
-Stories that do not have a HEA/HFN
-Major Character Death (where the character remains dead and is not, for example, a ghost or a zombie)
PLEASE INCLUDE TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR:
-Homophobia/Transphobia
-Elements of grief
MENTORING STYLE
I am very hands on, preferring quick communication and line level work. I am the type of mentor who will send you memes and incomprehensible babble when I'm excited, and will talk through the elements that aren't working as well through zoom or other accessible means. My edits will be delivered both at the line level, and in an edit letter once I've gotten through the work as a whole.
APPLICATIONS FROM CONNECTIONS
Please do not submit to me if I know you personally or have beta read for you before! If we have not extensively interacted, but follow each other on socials, or happen to be in the same discord but do not interact, you are welcome to apply.
